David Senra hosts Founders, the podcast this library is built around. He published its first episode, on Elon Musk, on 19 September 2016 from his Miami kitchen on a $100 microphone, under the show’s original placeholder title, ‘Autotelic.’ For five and a half years almost no one listened; in 2018 he committed to it full-time after rereading Paul Graham’s essay ‘How to Do What You Love.’ Each week he hand-annotates and distills one biography into an episode — Dyson’s Against the Odds alone four times by episode #400 (2025). Founders joined Colossus in 2022; his notes became the paid product Founders Notes, and in 2025 he launched a second show, David Senra, for talks with living founders.

- 2025Launches a second show, David Senra, produced with Andrew Huberman’s Scicomm Media, for long-form conversations with living founders; it debuts 28 September with Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek, while Founders continues on its normal weekly schedule.

Lessons for founders
- Reread the best sources instead of only consuming new ones. Senra has returned to a handful of biographies — Dyson’s Against the Odds, Estée Lauder’s Estée, Sam Walton’s Made in America — across four, three, and two episodes respectively, extracting new lessons each pass rather than treating a book as read-once-and-shelved.
- Study people, not tactics. Founders is built entirely on individual biographies rather than frameworks or how-to books, on the premise that a single person’s accumulated experience teaches more reliably than distilled advice does.
- Go all-in on one narrow obsession rather than diversifying. After building a car- and boat-detailing business and a robocall-tracking startup, Senra dropped every other venture — including a side project called David’s Notes — for a single format: one biography, one episode, every week, for going on a decade.
- Let effort compound instead of chasing individual hits. No single episode made Founders valuable; five and a half years of weekly episodes with almost no listeners preceded the growth that followed, and the back catalogue now compounds through word of mouth as listeners binge episodes years after release.
- Go to primary sources, not secondhand summaries. Senra reads full biographies and autobiographies rather than articles or takes about a founder, spending 25–30 hours researching a single 90-minute episode before he records it.
- Do the unscalable thing yourself. Nearly a decade and 400-plus biographies in, Senra still reads every book in hard copy with a pen and ruler, records solo, and edits every episode himself rather than delegating research or production.
- Take notes built to be reused, not just taken. Since 2018 Senra has logged every highlight into a searchable Readwise database — now more than 20,000 entries — specifically so he can retrieve an idea years later, rather than letting it sit unused in a finished book.
- Turn the byproduct of your own work into the product. Founders Notes, the paid, searchable database of his highlights, wasn’t built for customers first — Senra built it for his own daily use and then opened access to it, a tool made possible only because he’d already done years of reading and note-taking for the podcast.
