Summary
Rudyard Kipling's 1894 collection of stories set in the Indian jungle, most famously following Mowgli, a human child raised by wolves who must navigate the competing claims of the wolf pack, the bear Baloo, the panther Bagheera, and the tiger Shere Khan. Interspersed with the Mowgli arc are stand-alone tales such as "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" about a heroic mongoose and "The White Seal" about a seal searching for a safe haven. Written while Kipling lived in Vermont, the book is a layered exploration of law, loyalty, and belonging disguised as children's adventure.
