Summary
Bilbo Baggins, a comfortable hobbit who prefers his armchair to adventure, is swept into a quest by the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves to reclaim their homeland and treasure from the dragon Smaug. Along the way he encounters trolls, goblins, giant spiders, wood-elves, and the creature Gollum, from whom he acquires a mysterious golden ring. Tolkien's first Middle-earth novel started as a children's story and became the foundation for one of the most influential fantasy epics ever written.
