Summary
William Golding's 1954 allegorical novel about a group of British schoolboys stranded on a deserted island who descend from order into savagery. A critique of the romantic view of human nature, the novel traces the struggle between Ralph's civilisation-building and Jack's tribal violence, ending with the arrival of a naval officer who rescues the boys while missing entirely what has just occurred.
