Summary
Adam Hochschild tells the story of the roughly 2,800 American volunteers who fought in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade on the Republican side of the Spanish Civil War. The book follows several individuals through the war, capturing their idealism, the brutality of combat, and their disillusionment as the Republic fell.
